Music for Peace: An Evening of Carnatic Violin With Shriram Rajagopalan
April 11, 2026
Carnatic Violin Concert with Shriram
Join us for an evening of Carnatic (South Indian) classical music featuring violinist Shriram, whose playing carries the depth, discipline, and devotional spirit of one of India’s oldest musical traditions.
Carnatic music is a centuries-old system of classical music from South India, known for its intricate melodic structures, rhythmic complexity, and deeply meditative quality. Rooted in devotion and refined through generations of teachers and students, it remains a living tradition that continues to evolve while honoring its lineage.
Shriram brings this tradition to life through the expressive voice of the violin. Having trained extensively in both vocal and instrumental Carnatic music, his playing reflects a rare combination of technical precision, emotional depth, and reverence for the art form.
The evening will offer a journey through ragas — melodic frameworks that invite both performer and listener into a contemplative musical dialogue. Whether you are new to Indian classical music or familiar with its traditions, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the subtle beauty of Carnatic violin in an intimate setting.
All are welcome.
About the Artist
Shriram hails from the ancient city of Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, India. He began his musical journey at the age of ten studying Carnatic vocal music under the guidance of veteran teacher Mani Bhagavathar.
Soon drawn to instrumental music, Shriram began learning the violin from Guru Nellai Ravindran, with whom he trained for nearly a decade. During this time he also began accompanying vocalists in concerts and has since performed in over 100 classical performances.
He later deepened his training under two of the most respected figures in Carnatic violin: the legendary Padma Bhushan M.S. Gopalakrishnan and Kalai Maamani Dr. Narmadha in Chennai.
Since relocating to Canada, Shriram continues to perform and teach Carnatic violin, sharing this rich musical heritage with new audiences while maintaining a strong connection to the traditional lineage of the art form.
